Dramaturgie d'un théâtre oublié

Abstract:

The purpose of this article is to analyse Isabelle de Charrière’s dramatic work in an eighteenth-century context. What was the author’s position amongst the playwrights of her time? By which dialogic and theatrical means did she dramatize her educational views? To what extent was she influencend by Molière? If Isabelle de Charrière did not follow the movements unfolding during the second half of the century in drama and revolutionary theatre, was this a deliberate action on her part? Her sense of analysis, of moderation, and her mixed feelings concerning history, and especially the French Revolution certainly ran against these. Can one understand the aesthetic of her theatre in line with her ideology and sensibility?
