Potgieter and Busken Huet

The letters exchanged between these two leading Dutch critics have been approached in this project with the help of Olf Praamstra's, Repertorium op de brieven van Conrad Busken Huet (Amsterdam, 1987). We found 46 comments on women authors (not all of them by Huet or Potgieter: others are cited in their letters): 24 of them are about Dutch authors.

The first to be mentioned in 1859 is Geertruida Bosboom-Toussaint, who at present has her place in the literary canon, and was a good friend of the two men; the last, in 1875, is Mrs Sloot, who wrote under the pseudonym of "Melati of Java", a celebrity at the time and now more or less forgotten.
