West European and East European women travellers in Istanbul

Abstract

My paper will discuss the travel and accommodation of Bulgarian women writers in the territories of Romania in the late 19th century, and the travel and inspiration of Bulgarian women who visited the Ottoman lands in the early 20th century.

Firstly, I will deal with the issue of how space and its previous history of travel writing enhance the possibility of women to write and publish. Secondly, I will make an overview of several travel accounts of West European and East European women who constituted their female authorship by transforming the account of a certain city or region as a spatial journey of their own thoughts and emotions.

The names of western writers of travelogues such as Mary Wortley Montagu, Sofia Julia Pardoe, Elisabeth Hornby and some others will be discussed in relation to the works of “local” writers such as Demetra Vaka, Evgenia Mars, Evgenia Kisimova, Ekaterina Vassileva.
