Françoise Denis: "Religion et héroïsme féminin au XIIe siècle: variations narratives et manipulations d'auteurs"
Abstract:
The comparison between three contemporary texts from the Middle Ages (Girart de Roussillon, Eliduc, Ille et Galeron) allows us to define a type of feminine heroism, characterized by renunciation and self-sacrifice, that influences further developments in the narration. The comparison of the texts of such well-known authors as Marie de France and Gautier d'Arras offers an exceptional opportunity to confront masculine versus feminine voices on a similar topos. It reveals how differently the two genders manipulate the cogs of the narration to suit their specific interests.
