Madame de Genlis fut, tout comme Madame de Staël, la fille d'une mère écrivaine: de Madame de Saint-Aubin, auteure d'un roman portant un titre qu'ambitionnerait plus tard Laclos: Le Danger des liaisons (1753) et d'un des tout premiers périodiques de mode: Le Courrier de la nouveauté (1757).
