A close reading of the playing with narrative voices orchestrated by Charrière in five of her novels sheds light on her tendency to experiment with the gender and status of the voices that recount the story. Her writing thus appears as a continuous attempt to subvert and maybe transcend commonly held assumptions on masculine and feminine, power and subjection, reason and sensitivity.

Marie-Hélène Chabut: "L'instance narrative au masculin et au féminin (et au neutre?) dans la fiction d'Isabelle de Charrière"

Abstract:

This study examines, in Isabelle de Charrière's fiction, the masculine and feminine variations on narrative voices and on topoi closely linked with them.
