Isabelle de Charrière et la littérature du Grand Siècle

Abstract:

In this paper we first establish a parallel between Mme de Charrière and Johannes Kneppelhout (1814-1885), a Dutch author who greatly admired French classicism. We then concentrate on the way in which Mme de Charrière read the works of the great authors of this period and drew upon them in her own writings. Particular favourites with her were La Fontaine’s Fables, Mme de Sévigné’s letters and Molière’s comedies.
