French literary historians



One of the important forerunners of French historiography concerning women is the Abbé Joseph de La Porte, who published in 1769 his 5-volume Histoire littéraire des femmes françaises. This work is now starting to be analyzed as being crucial for the reputation of women publishing before its appearance.
Although, possibly, La Porte is not to be considered as a very enthusiastic reader of these women's writings, he provides us with an important number of names, which he is commenting in most of the cases. For those writers he considers important enough he also
