Errances et errements des personnages masculins et féminins
Abstract in English:
This is a study of the symbolic and ideological values that may be attached to the movements of Charrière’s characters in fictional space. The author makes distinctions between her male and female characters: the interpretations suggested by Charrière regarding their behavior do indeed show a difference based on gender. Female characters have “the right” to stay put or to flee, while this is considered inappropriate behavior in male characters. What is striking in her work in general, as to the characters’ movements or immobility, is the great diversity of narrative solutions proposed by isabelle de Charrière.
