Women Writing Women in Early Modern France
Abstract:
In our reflections on Female authorship and its tradition, I would like to focus on the literary work of three women writers spanning the 17th and 18th centuries in order to underscore their heritage and legacy. I would like to show the interconnectedness of their works: how these women read, received and were marked by the texts of their predecessors. They did not merely comment on the texts they read, they absorbed them, remodeled them according to their own style, period, points of view and re-positioned themselves accordingly. Through the references and reinterpretation of old texts, they expand and reveal their poetics (literary theory). I would like to follow Anne-Marguerite Du Noyer’s trajectory (hypertextuality) as a reader, commentator and especially as a remodeler of Madeleine de Scudéry’s fictional universe (especially the emphasis on love, marriage and heroic young lovers) as well as Françoise de Graffigny’s reworkings of Mme Du Noyer’s oeuvre.
