Ouvrages de dames? Ouvrages d’une dame?

Abstract in English:

Women are reputed to be great embroiderers. Rousseau played an important role in creating this image. Indeed, many women who are known today for their other activities - such as writing - also indulged in needlework. So did Belle de Zuylen, as demonstrated by a darning sample of hers which has been preserved. Since this is in conflict with the current image of "rebellious Belle", the collection of articles in this first issue of the Belle de Zuylen Papers would like to shed some light on the question of women's use of pens for writing and needles for embroidery, the preferences Belle de Zuylen may have had herself and their educational context.
