Jean-Pierre Dubost: "Masculin/féminin, topoi inversés, topoi croisés"

Abstract:

The aim of this article is to emphasize what kind of difficulties inevitably arise as soon as we try to define correctly topical definitions from the angle of gender. As far as a topos is not definable, so long as topical circumstances do not appear within the topical definition, and because topoi do not occur as isolated configurations, since they are always part of a longer topical sequence, marking the difference between male and female inside the topical definition is an awkward undertaking. What happens with the M/F distinction, considering the fact that opposite narrative configurations are part of contrepuntal structures, including asymmetrical mirror-structures of genders, and taking into account that the general view of a topical «chain') may hide the peculiarity of topoi belonging to this chain?
Following the kind of questioning that I have proposed during the conference of Kairouan. in reference to the topical configuration of Flight, I propose here to formulate some possible rules of writing based on the problems that arise when one analyses the «hypertopic» definition «a man/a woman is tormenting a woman/man».
