A modern critical reading of this work which might suggest that Madame de Souza was a denunciation novelist is refuted by a quick analysis of this novel and of subsequent work from this novelist.

Abstract:

The present paper examines how this novel, which was published in 1 794 by Madame de Souza, was received by the reading public. The focus is on two qualitatively different texts. First, Isabelle de Charrière alludes to this novel in Trois femmes (1797) through three different points of view, namely these of the narrator, the characters, and the novelist. What she wrote about Adèle de Sénange should essentially be read in relation to her own fiction. Sainte-Beuve in his analysis (1834) proposed an interpretation of this novel which very much depends on the moment of its enunciation. He transforms narration into image and spontaneously adopts the point of view of a male character.
