Abstract

This presentation aims at giving a panoramic view of the public role of Italian women from the second half of the 18th century until 1815 through the analysis of Italian salotti. Italy is a grand tour destination and as such it attracts scores of foreign visitors: its main cities become ebullient multicultural centers, each with its own specific character.

I will sketch the intellectual and social life around the salotti of Turin, Milan, Venice, Florence, Rome, and Napoli in light of the connections that the women who animated them established with other women, especially artists and foreigners, like Mary Wortly Montagu, Madame du Boccage, Angelika Kauffmann, Elizabeth Vigée-Lebrun, the Countess d’Albany and Madame de Staël.

Given the relatively recent access of upper class Italian women to education and the public social space, and their still very strong dependence on the male figure, this presentation underlines how in Italy, at the end of the 18th century, epistolary correspondences and literary dialogues between women are still difficult and rare.
