Elisabetta Caminer Turra: Translator, Mediator, and Ā«Cultural ManagerĀ»

Elisabetta Caminer Turra (1751-1796)was an outstanding woman of the Italian Enlightenment; as a writer, journalist and translator she played an important part in the processes of cultural transfer in the Europe of her time, especially in the exchanges between France and Italy. The strategies she had to develop in order to pursue her activity and the instances of self-censorship in her writing prove the ambivalent and precarious nature of such an enterprise. They give us an idea of the courage a woman had to muster if she wanted to become an active player on her own right in the great project of the Enlightenment.
