Early Modern Women Intellectuals in 19. century Serbia

by Ivana Pantelic

This paper deals with appearance of female intellectuals and their position in society of the 19th century Serbia. Even though society of the 19th century Serbia was poor, backward and under pressures of the Ottoman inheritance and Austrian imperialism, female intellectuals appeared in the similar manner as in contemporary societies of Central European states. Despite the fact that society was traditional and patriarchal few female writers, artists, journalists and professionals were playing significant role in Principality/Kingdom of Serbia.

In this paper education and career-development of several female intellectuals would be presented. A comparison of legal, educational and professional position of women in Serbia and other Balkan and European states would be examined. The attitude of political elite towards women’s emancipation would be also assessed.
