Božena N?mcov? and her reception in Czech society

Abstract

The paper will analyse the concept of femininity and the search for a gender identity in the most famous novel of the Czech writer Božena N?mcová: Babi?ka (The grandmother). We will consider the making of the canon, the psychology and philosophy of the main literary figures and we will be interested in the literary work oscillating between romanticism and realism. We will explore the possibilities of the narrative strategy. On the other side we will also consider the question of the reception of this novel. Its reception in the 19th century was influenced by Czech national ideas. In the comparative perspective we will compare modern and historical reception .
