Belle de Zuylen et son “reprisoir” (1758)

Abstract in English:

Zuylen Castle holds a small piece of linen with darning exercises, which are supposed to have been done in 1758 by Belle de Zuylen. This article interrogates her correspondence and some of her novels, in order to understand the author as needle-worker. Although clearly she did not comment on her 1758 darning activities, and even declared not to like needlework, she was certainly familiar with it, and, when writing novels, particularly conscious of its narrative possibilities.
