-	As a female writer, Isabelle de Charrière experienced some difficulties in entering the political arena openly. This is the reason why she frequently published anonymously. Although in many cases this was an appropriate strategy, it proved to be counter-productive in the case of the ''Réponse à l’écrit du colonel de La Harpe'' (1797), which was the last of the political pamphlets she published. It seems to have been caused by a delicate ar-gument she uses in this text: those who were addressed by this political pamphlet, mostly men, could not, or only with difficulty, agree with the perspective adopted by Charrière.<br><br>	+	Belle de Zuylen/Isabelle de Charrière était fascinée par l’Angleterre et par l’anglais, à tel point qu’elle apprit la langue et que plus tard elle l’enseigna à de jeunes élèves en Suisse. Son anglais, que l’on peut qualifier de “bon”, n’avait encore jamais été étudié. C’est là le premier objectif de cet article, qui comporte deux niveaux. En étudiant le cas d’un seul auteur, en l’occurrence Belle de Zuylen/Isabelle de Charrière, il analyse la façon dont on apprenait l’anglais aux Pays-Bas, à une époque où les moyens pour le faire étaient quasi inexistants. Ensuite il utilise, et teste, l’édition numérisée de la correspondance charriérienne qui est actuellement en cours de préparation à l’Institut Huygens pour l’Histoire des Pays-Bas. Cette approche linguistique a permis d’identifier la quantité d’anglais figurant dans ces lettres, après quoi les compétences de l’auteure en anglais ont été analysées, en comparant orthographe, vocabulaire et syntaxe à l’emploi courant à l’époque. On semble devoir conclure qu’elle a pu apprendre l’anglais grâce à ses amis venus d’Ecosse : soit James Boswell, soit Robert Brown, pasteur à Utrecht – voire même grâce aux deux.
