Marta Teixeira Anacleto: "Le genre et la "réécriture" du romanesque au féminin : les (en)jeux des topoi dans la traduction française de La Diane de Montemayor par Madame Gillot de Saintonge (1699-1733)"



Abstract:

The only French translation of Montemayor's Diana (1550) made by a woman translator, at the end of the XVIIth century (1699) reveals the subtle links between the rewritten text and the cultural/ideological intervention present in its language. The «gender» question naturally arises through a reconstruction project of a new scriptural model, which underlies the passage from the pastoral novel to the «nouvelle galante», created by this woman translator and practiced at the end of the century by writers such as Madame de La Fayette, Madame de Villedieu. The process of «producing text» which is part of any translation, leads to a gender fact where the «topoi» of the original text are erased or transformed, according to the rules of a «feminine» fiction which presupposes the transgression of the bucolic codes. The deconstruction of the pastoral novel (and its «topoi») revealed by the rewriting act is developed in the context of a personal epistemological project adapted to the increase of an aesthetical and historical feminism regulated by production and reception factors, which, at the end of the XVIIth century, justify the choice of the «galant», gender and the almost definitive abandon of the pastoral universe of L'Astrée.
